Annual Farewell

All coloured pencil drawings are original and hand-drawn and created by using multiple layers of coloured pencil. Each piece is finished with a UV Archival Spray after each layer of coloured pencil which protects it from sun exposure and smudging. All drawings are ready to hang.

In this new drawing, I explore the relationship between birds and fabric. These are two seemingly dissimilar elements connected through flight and movement. Birds are often symbols of freedom, grace and beauty, while fabrics provide both function and meaning, serving many purposes both practical and sentimental.

My fabric drawings capture the essence of fabric in its current form, creating a visual record of a moment in time. Birds like fabric can also symbolize the passing of time, with their migration patterns marking the seasons.

I’ve always been intrigued by birds. In fact, most of my personal art collection is bird-themed. The combination of their strength and fragility replicates fabric characteristics, both emulating freedom and nostalgia.

This idea to include birds in my drawings came to me from an incident involving a robin sitting on the windowsill.

A robin visited the living room window and stared in, much longer than birds normally do. It eventually flew away and I immediately remembered the story my Grandmother (whom I grew up very close to) told me about the robin that visited her window every day for a week after my Grandpa passed away.

The next day, I was sitting at my drawing table (which sits in front of the window) and a robin flew over and sat on the windowsill. Of course, I have no idea if it was the same robin as the day before, but I couldn’t ignore the coincidence. We both scared each other, and it immediately flew away, and I knew I needed to create something from this experience.

These drawings speak to the idea of finding freedom and beauty in unexpected places. Birds and fabric may seem like an unlikely pairing. However, through my art, I hope to show that there is beauty to be found in unexpected connections and intersections of life. These drawings are a way for me to capture nostalgic moments and preserve them tangible.
